Oscar De La Hoya thinks that Jaime Munguia, his client, will benefit in the long run from his loss against Canelo Alvarez on Saturday.
Munguia challenged Alvarez on May 4 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the WBA, WBC, WBO, and IBF super middleweight titles.
The more experienced Alvarez was coming off a unanimous decision win over Jermell Charlo going into the fight. But in Munguia’s most recent bout, the unbeaten man submitted John Ryder by TKO.
Munguia attempted to attack Alvarez with a fast tempo and youthful energy. Alvarez, on the other hand, went in a more calculated direction.
Munguia continued to hit hard, maybe using his speed to overwhelm the champion. But in Round 4, Alvarez’s more restrained uppercut knocked him out, emphasizing the difference in experience.
Although Munguia was the busier combatant the entire fight, Alvarez’s strikes were more powerful. In the end, a unanimous decision allowed the winner to retain his titles (117-110, 116-111, 115-112).
Prior to the fight, Alvarez appeared to be focusing on his former promoter De La Hoya, with whom he has a serious falling out.
De La Hoya talked on Munguia’s performance during the post-fight conference. He made reference to Alvarez’s rise in the sport following his loss to Floyd Mayweather and said that Munguia would follow in his footsteps and become the face of boxing:
